On BusinessWeek there is an opinion on the state of innovation in enterprise software – Boring Software 2.0. A quick comment on a specific part of the article "I was at a dinner two nights ago with some executives from Mercury Interactive and one of the reporters asked if a software startup could make it to $1 billion in revenues purely by growing organically. The consensus was a quick no." – I see an underlying assumption here, which is the word "organically" – Startups can also grow by acquisitions both complementary in terms of technology as well as market share for quicker market entrance and expansion. It all depends on the vision and competence of the management team.
