Partial Search on Strategic Board

Monday, August 21st, 2006

supports or maybe we can call it . Partial search means that every keyword or phrase you search for is matched mutiple times against every variant of the keyword or phrase. For example if you search for the keyword ‘‘ then both posts that contain the keyword will appear as well as posts with the keyword . It works the same way for phrases where you can search “” and this will yield results with “” and ““.

This is an excellent tool to locate wider spectrum of posts and not only the ones with perfect matches.

Web 2.0: Who needs VCs? - I DO

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Donna Bogatin writes Web 2.0: Who needs VCs? and says that based on a rationale of a highly consolidated market of internet publishers every piece of web 2.0 (the successful ones) is acquired by Google or other behemoth web application aggregator and that is why VCs are not relevant to the Web 2.0 story.

I fully agree that this is the current market reality and todays’ state of mind where a 100K USD check by Google for your innovation is the holy grail for entrepreneurs (And of course a nice job offer at GooglePlex) but it does not mean I am not sorry it is the way it is.

If we take a space shuttle progress as an illustration for a startup activity then the entrepreneurs fuels the launch of the startup, which means a small amount of fuel (made mostly of blood, sweat and tears). Only after a successful detachment from the ground (initial but steady acceptance from a specific growing user based) the VCs should come into the picture with their second stage tank fuel which should be enough to help the startup get into orbit. What happens in reality is that the big internet companies just sit and wait to pick those who are rising up a bit while killing every opportunity for a new mega player to emerge in their market.

I know most VCs are still trying to fit the new form called a web 2.0 innovation into their template of enterprise based venture but still without them who can help create a chance for a small web 2.0 company to become something more meaningful then just a set of php scripts. It will be quite sad if in ten years time the internet market will grow many many times and will still be held in the trio of Google-MSN-Yahoo and unless VCs grasp that Google and Yahoo grew up the same way successful web 2.0 innovations grow now then it will happen.

Of course, if the web 2.0 innovation is so successful to become a mega giant based on a 700$ budget then VCs are not needed. Sadly, not all of us share this kind of luck!

P.S. I haven’t blogged for a long time now, due to many excuses but nothing really serious. I plan to get back to it gradually now.
